What is Ayurveda ?

Ayurveda is a 3000 years old Eastern medicine that is currently used in India, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Pakistan.
Ayurveda is the oldest traditional medicine in the world and dates back to the Vedas time. Ayurveda is based on the three old texts of the Vedas written in the Sanskrit language. They are the Charaka Samhita, the Susruta Samhita and the Ashtanga Hridayam.
Ayurveda has changed and evolved with time.
Throughout history there have been new discoveries, which contributed to the original Ayurvedic knowledge.
Ayurveda has spread from India to other countries.
Monks and merchants have brought Ayurveda to the Middle East, China, Tibet and Greece.

Ayurveda is becoming more and more popular in Europe and in the U.S.

Ayurveda is recognised and recommended by WHO ( World Health Organisation) and is remboursed by many insurance companies.

It’s a complete health system that is connected to other vedic systems and therapies like Yoga, meditation and the chakras. Ayurveda has many similarities with the Tibetan medicine, the old Greek medicine and the Chinese medicine, for example, the elements, the tastes, the herbs, the pressure points and some concepts like the body-mind-soul unity and the selfhealing capacity of the body.

Ayurveda works with specific diets, spices, herbs, crystals, colors, hot stones, detoxing therapies, thermotherapy, aromatherapy, massage techniques and pressure points. Yoga, breathing therapy and meditation are recommended too.

According to Ayurveda everybody is supposed to be healthy and happy. Happiness is a positive energy that strenghens our immune system and makes us shine. When we are sick (on the physical or psychological level) this positive energy is affected. We can fall into a negative spiral and lose our balance.

According to Ayurveda every sickness is caused by the energetical imbalance in our body-mind system. The energy circulates in channels (meridians – nadis) throughout the whole body. This energy is made up of the 5 elements

ether – air – fire – water – earth

Everybody is born with a specific body-mind type where one or more doshas are dominant. The doshas/body-types are:

Vata (ether+air) – Pitta (fire+water) – Kapha (water+earth)

With Ayurveda we can find the diet and the lifestyle that is more suitable to balance our body-mind system.
Are you a vata – a pitta – a kapha type or a mix ?
Which diet and life style is more suitable for you?
